“SO YOUNG BUT SO CAPABLE”
Behind his engaging smile is a gentle heart;
behind his simple appearance is a capable mind. That characterization may be simplistic but
it capsulizes the short life of Father Vena Lacorte whose stay with us was snuffed in the bud at the age of 44. It is with extreme sorrow and fond
memories that we recall
the life of our simple, humble, loving and capable
confrere and entrust him in the
loving hands of God.
I have personally known him as a
seminarian, a priest and as a confrere in the Provincial Office where he
was the provincial treasurer.
The last
time I saw him was only a few days ago, a few days before Christmas,
when he came to Tandang
Sora. He
was full of smiles
and pleasantries and above all full of concern for his beloved
“bonsai trees.” He always impressed me as a confrere open to
many persons and things- be they young and old, conservative or liberal, old or
modern. Last year, I was preparing my lesson for
“Vincentian Studies” and when he saw
one topic “St.Vincent and his Philosophy of Work” he
immediately asked for a copy of my
short talk. Why would a Provincial Econome want to
read something about the philosophy of work of St. Vincent de Paul?
Well, he had a good grasp of Vincentian
spirituality and was aware of the many splendoured talents of our Founder.
Father Vena’s
effectiveness in
his various jobs during the past
fifteen years, after his ordination, aptly demonstrated his capable
mind and loving heart. He was assigned to
some of the most difficult jobs in the
Province: Provincial treasurer, parish priest in various parishes, including Payatas, and,
in all of them, he showed graceful
peace under fire and love where there was lots of hatred. His work with the
Society of St.
Vincent de Paul (SSVP) and other lay
organizations was something to see, although the lay persons have recognized this and have shown their appreciation for his generosity towards
them. May Father Vena rest in peace,
(Fr. Roland Delagoza, CM)
